Greater Phoenix Urban League

A nonprofit organization

The mission of Greater Phoenix Urban League is to be an agent of change; to support minorities and those in need in achieving economic and social equality through programs in economic empowerment, housing, education, civic engagement, and health and wellness.

Since its inception in 1945, the Greater Phoenix Urban League (GPUL) has been committed to improving the lives of those facing difficulties. Key to its impact are its focused educational programs, home ownership assistance, and job readiness training.

Early Childhood Education: GPUL's Early Childhood Education program caters to children aged 3-5 from low-income families, focusing on their intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. Hundreds of children benefit from this initiative annually.

Housing: Recognized for its excellence in housing education, the GPUL is a HUD-approved agency. Through collaborations with the city of Phoenix and the state of Arizona, it implements programs like the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) and the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program (NFMC), aiding distressed homeowners. GPUL's goal is to help families find safe, affordable housing.

Employment: GPUL's Employment Program, operational since 1945, helps residents find fulfilling jobs. It's centered around building a diverse employer network, preparing and matching candidates to suitable jobs, and ensuring these positions are sustainable. The program equips job seekers with necessary tools, though the onus of securing a job lies with the individual.

Youth Services: GPUL is dedicated to empowering youth to forge their own success. This is achieved through comprehensive strategies including job readiness training, career coaching, financial literacy, and opportunities for internships and college education. The Summer Youth Employment program provides 16-21-year-olds with a 5-week paid internship, guidance from a counselor, and an additional stipend upon completing 110 hours of work and job readiness workshops. Last summer, 160 work experiences were provided in Maricopa County, with a goal to increase this to 300 in summer 2024.
