Arizona Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation, Inc. began in 2005 as "Arizona Carcinoid Fighters", a support group. In 2015, we became incorporated as "Arizona Carcinoid and Neuroendocrine Foundation", a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We subsequently updated our name to "Arizona Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation, Inc." to accurately include the word "cancer".
Neuroendocrine cancer, also referred to as neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN), or carcinoid, is a rare type of cancer that develops in the neuroendocrine cells that secrete hormones into the body. These cells are found throughout the body's organs and help control many of the body's functions. Normal neuroendocrine cells are often hard to see under the microscope because they are small and hidden between other types of cells. Some neuroendocrine cancer can take years to develop and grows slowly, while other neuroendocrine cancer is fast-growing. Neuroendocrine cancer represents an estimated 2% of all cancer malignancies in the United States. According to Cancer.Net, more than 12,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor (NET) each year, and approximately 171,000 people are living with this diagnosis. Please visit our website, www.azncf.org , for more information on the diagnosis and treatment of this rare disease.
