MISSION The mission of Friends is to cultivate exceptional outdoor learning experiences that instill the value of preserving our natural world and inspire growth and discovery.
Camp Colton, Flagstaff Unified School District's environmental education center, immerses students in nature. Friends partners closely with FUSD to make Camp more accessible, develop innovative programs, and spearhead long-range planning. Camp helps students engage in self-discovery, develop positive relationships with their peers and teachers, and appreciate and understand their natural environment. The longstanding residential 6th grade program is a treasured community tradition that builds independence and confidence. Camp also offers day expeditions for 1st and 2nd grade students and the STEM Environmental Enrichment and Discovery Summer Experience for 7th and 8th grade students. Friends is committed to the ongoing development and success of this unique local resource. A major part of our fundraising efforts ensures that all low income students attend Camp for free. The cost of the 6th grade 4 day and 3 night 6th grade program is $400. Annually, around 1,000 students from across northern Arizona experience the wonders of Camp, most through immersive residential programs. Since Camp Colton began in 1971, more than 48,000 students have gained environmental literacy and developed socially, emotionally, and academically through our programs.
“At Camp Colton, I learned how to take care of myself and I got more confident about staying away from my family longer. I loved learning about trees, forests, stars, water, flowers, nature, space, and the sun.” - Emily, 6th Grade Camper
“At Camp Colton, students make connections and friendships with staff and peers that seem unbreakable. This experience cannot be replaced.” - 6th Grade Teacher, Lexi Artusa-Sirota, MEMS
"I think it is important for students to be able to experience Camp Colton because it is fun and it helps kids make friends and connect with nature." - Mercy, 6th Grade Camper
