Health First Foundation serves the five counties of northern Arizona, a largely rural and diverse region. Much of the area is economically disadvantaged. Poverty rates are higher than the national average in each county, with one recording more than 28% of residents living in poverty. Access to primary care providers is nonexistent or very limited in rural areas and problematic in cities. Northern Arizona is also home to 12 sovereign tribal communities with significant health care and health status inequities. These factors and others lend to many regional health challenges; among them are high rates of chronic disease, considerable gaps in mental health care, and a myriad of issues accessing primary and specialty health care. Health First addresses these challenges by awarding grants to innovative nonprofit initiatives that target health priorities and reach every corner of our expansive geography. Health First scholarships support college-level health and healthcare education in northern Arizona, responding to the critical need for quality health professionals in the region.

"Hundreds of patients have been impacted by this program, and there is no doubt that some lives have been saved," -Hunter Adams, CEO of Creek Valley Health Clinic, a Health First grant recipient.
"This training will significantly impact our capabilities and response to emergency situations. It will enable us to save lives," -Lt. Charles Hernandez II, Flagstaff Police Department.
