Housing Solutions' Sharon Manor Program

The mission of Housing Solutions is to build opportunities for sustainable, affordable housing in northern Arizona. The mission of the Sharon Manor Housing Program is to build self-sufficiency and economic empowerment of homeless, domestic violence survivors and their children through safe transitional housing, workforce training, clothing, meals, youth education and activities and wrap-around support services.

Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona is a local, grassroots founded nonprofit housing organization which has served northern Arizona for 30 years. As a HUD approved counseling agency, Housing Solutions offers Financial Literacy & Homebuyer Education; Foreclosure Mitigation and Prevention; New Construction and Rehab or Affordable Homes for sale and/or rent. We own and operate Sharon Manor which is Transitional Housing for homeless domestic violence survivors and their children. Our Sharon's Attic thrift store supports our programs as well, especially Sharon Manor.

When Michael first moved into Sharon Manor, he was afraid to sleep in his own bed much less his own room. Before finding safety at our transitional living shelter, his father would come home from work angry, causing lots of pain and fear for him and his mother Amanda. When they decided it was enough, they fled to live in a motel. His father even tracked them down one night when they were trying to escape. That night, he got so enraged that he beat Michael and locked him in the bathroom. The noise from the motel room startled their neighbors. Fortunately, the police were called by another hotel guest and he was arrested. By the time they moved into Sharon Manor, Michael was so afraid he could not talk to anyone but his Mom. Michael had moved around and missed so much school before he came to Sharon Manor that he had trouble making friends and had an undiagnosed learning disability along with an anxiety disorder. At Sharon Manor, Case Managers advocated for him to receive an Individualized Education Plan. He also received services from a counselor and began to thrive! Michael is now a fantastic student that his teachers just love to work with. After receiving the necessary services in both one-on-one and group sessions, they desperately needed, Michael and his mom left Sharon Manor with self-sufficiency and a positive outlook towards the future. Today, they have their very own home. His mother is self-employed. Michael is now a chatter box making friends at school and earning his black belt in karate. So many children who are survivors of DV and homelessness have very similar stories with undiagnosed needs. Without the intervention they need these children are at great risk for dropping out, serious mental health issues, incarceration, and most of all they are likely to live a lifetime of abuse.
