Living Streets Alliance (LSA) works to bring together and mobilize voices for a vibrant, multi-modal Tucson, where everyone can get where they need to go safely, conveniently, and affordably.
LSA engages youth, families, schools, and neighborhoods in envisioning and articulating a future with vibrant streets and quality transportation options through programs like Safe Routes to School. LSA invites people to experience streets in a different way and experiment with changes they'd like to see on the ground through our Cyclovia Tucson "open streets" events. LSA works to make these transportation improvements a reality by mobilizing and advocating for things like Bicycle Boulevards, dedicated funding sources, and community-led public policies such as Complete Streets.
Since 2016, LSA has led four separate tactical-urbanism projects to transform public streets using paint, planters, and other low-cost materials to enhance community space and improve safety for people on foot, bike, and taking transit. This included colorful murals on the streets and in traffic-circles, as well as one large scale intersection transformation in a burgeoning Tucson business district, the first of its kind in Arizona. The most recent example is the 6th Avenue Asphalt Art project which can be enjoyed on 6th Avenue between Armory Park and the Children's Museum Tucson. Tactical-urbanism projects demonstrate how streets can be vibrant and living spaces that prioritize people over cars.
Living Streets Alliance also works at the policy level, dedicated to long-term systems change. LSA has been successful in pushing for policies and funding that prioritize safe and accessible streets for people of all ages and abilities. From 2016-2018, LSA spearheaded a Complete Streets campaign that engaged hundreds of partners and individuals in developing a community-driven ordinance which was adopted by Tucson Mayor and Council in 2019. Prior to this, LSA successfully advocated for the passage of Proposition 407: Tucson Parks & Connections to build and enhance connections to parks and open spaces for people on foot and on bike, such as bike lanes and sidewalks. Many of the projects included within it were identified through walkability assessments and visioning activities led by LSA years prior. Recently, LSA advocated to get 20% of Proposition 411 to be dedicated to traffic safety enhancement such as sidewalks, push-button crossings, protected bike lanes, street lighting, traffic circles, and speedbumps, which was passed in May 2022.
What's At Stake in 2024:
**Safer streets for walkers and bicyclists through design and education
**Funding streets for people with RTA Next
**Transit that is comfortable, accessible, reliable and convenient
