Reid Park Zoo had its start in 1965 by Gene Reid, the City of Tucson's Director of Parks and Recreation. In 1976 the "Friends of Randolph Zoo" organization, which later became the Reid Park Zoological Society, was formed and a docent program was started. The group was organized as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit in 1977. Over the next 50 years the Zoo expanded, hiring professional zoo personnel, adding major renovations, gift shop, snack bar and new habitats as it became a popular destination and community resource for conservation education.
The Zoo is 24 acres and features animals from South America, Africa and Asia and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Soon, Reid Park Zoo will break ground on the Pathway to Asia area, which will welcome many new Asian species. The new Angel Charity for Children World of Play opened in November 2023 and transformed the old flamingo habitat at the back of the Zoo into a children's play and learning zone. Both of these additions will bring our community and, in particular, our children the opportunity to connect with nature through play, observation, and exploration.
Supporting the Reid Park Zoological Society enables us to continue providing educational programs to area schoolchildren, participation and support of conservation programs both locally and worldwide, provide exceptional and enriching animal care and make improvements to the Zoo for our animals and visitors.
We are thankful to our generous community and supporters, like you, for bringing these projects to life and helping build the future of Reid Park Zoo.
