As an institution built upon the original territories of the O'odham, the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block (TMA) acknowledges the Indigenous Sonoran Desert communities, past and present, who have stewarded this region throughout generations.
Since its beginnings in 1924 as the Tucson Fine Arts Association, the museum has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to high-quality art and culture. In 1975, the organization moved to its present location and formally became a collecting institution and the caretaker of five historic properties. Today, the museum features exhibitions of Modern and Contemporary art, Latin American art from ancient to today, Indigenous arts, and Art of the American West. TMA's campus includes five properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, an art education center and research library, the Museum Store and the highly acclaimed museum restaurant Café a la C'Art.
With its permanent collection of over 11,000 works of art spanning continents, centuries, and media the museum provides art exhibits rooted in scholarship and relevance; hosts events that foster community; serves as the steward of five properties; and operates a 6,800 square-foot art education center and research library. Since 2017 TMA has invested in its physical property, emphasized sophisticated and diverse exhibits, gained quality acquisitions and reimagined its community programs.
Tens of thousands of lives have been enriched by the museum's award-winning outreach program serving Tucson's refugee community, robust K-12 programs, one of the longest running statewide biennial exhibitions, public programs, and lifelong learning programs such as TMALearn! Docents. Many recent developments, including the construction of the Kasser Family Wing of Latin American Art, the renovation of the Alice Chaiten Baker Center for Art Education and grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to expand our IDEA-based community programs (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access), have positioned TMA as a place for social, civic and artistic interaction, creating a positive economic impact.
