Phoenix Chorale

A nonprofit organization

The mission of Phoenix Chorale is to nurture and amplify the strength and resonance of Arizona's choral artistry.

The Grammy Award-winning Phoenix Chorale is regarded as one of the finest choral ensembles in North America. The 28-voice professional singers of the Chorale all reside in Arizona, an unusual feat for professional choirs in the USA which are increasingly composed of singers who don't live where they perform. Phoenix Chorale truly reflects the best of Arizona and the strength of its advanced college choral programs, of which many of our singers are alumni. Several singers are music educators in the Valley's schools and community colleges, and their work with the Chorale nurtures their own work with the hundreds of singers they impact every day.

The Chorale typically presents 4 multi-concert series across the Valley between October and May, in various venues across the Valley. The annual 5-concert run at Christmas is a beloved tradition for so many.

Phoenix Chorale is led by Artistic Director Christopher Gabbitas, appointed in May 2019. A two-time Grammy Award-winning singer and former member of The King's Singers, Gabbitas has performed almost 2,000 concerts worldwide and has served as a clinician in over 500 masterclasses. Gabbitas' vision for the Phoenix Chorale is to increase its visibility at home and abroad, expand outreach opportunities, and increase the capacity of the Chorale to reach a broader audience.

The first stage of Gabbitas's vision encompasses three new ongoing initiatives: Phoenix Masterworks Series, Phoenix Commissions Project, and Valley Sing. The Phoenix Masterworks Series celebrates great but under-recognized choral works from the last 400 years, Through the Phoenix Commissions Project, the Chorale commissions a new work each season, and in its first 5 years by female composers. When donated space permits, Valley Sing, a multi-generational workshop, is designed to build community spirit through song, bringing together students, friends and neighbors from across the Valley of the Sun, for the fun and joy of singing.

The Phoenix Chorale's digital audience continues to grow with millions reached through radio broadcasts, performance videos, and streaming services, like Spotify, where the Chorale maintains a listenership of over 35,000 fans each month. The Chorale's recordings are treasured by music lovers around the world, spending over 20 weeks on the Billboard Charts, and earning a total of ten Grammy® nominations and three Grammy® wins.

The Chorale is ensemble-in-residence at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Phoenix, is sponsored in part through grants, funding, and support from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, Arizona Commission on the Arts, The Virginia B. Piper Foundation and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
