Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption (SA Greys) is a foster-based all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that betters the lives of former racing greyhounds by securing loving and qualified forever homes in Arizona and Albuquerque, Las Cruces, El Paso and Las Vegas. The majority of volunteers live in Tucson and Phoenix.
From Local to Global
Since our inception in 2012, we have adopted out more than 1,000 greyhounds who came from the Tucson Greyhound Park and other U.S. racetracks, breeding farms, been relinquished and/or turned into local shelters, and more recently from racetracks in Tijuana, Ireland and Australia.
Previously, our greatest accomplishments were to rehabilitate injured or ill greyhounds who suffered career-ending racing injuries like broken legs or illnesses that required exceptional veterinary care. We initiated Jackie's Fund when our original poster dog required costly veterinary expenses; it was so worth it as Jackie thrived. We have incurred more than $1,000,000 in veterinary care, treatment, and housing.
Currently, our most pressing expenses are veterinary care for complex conditions and for transporting greyhounds from other continents to the desert which has challenged our coffers. Did you know that Ireland has 16 dog tracks, is the size of Indiana and has the population of Alabama? Ireland breeds more than 1,000 percent more puppies than they actually need to conduct greyhound racing. There are simply too many available dogs that must find homes.
Since last year we have found homes for 56 former racing greyhounds plus 6 greyhounds who were relinquished to SA Greys. On March 23, 4 Aussie greyhounds arrived and are now in foster homes learning the pet life. Four more Aussie greyhounds will be arriving May 2. Why Aussie greyhounds? There are 57 dog tracks in Australia where dogs are overbred and there are not enough adopters. The Australian hounds fly as cargo to Los Angeles; it's a 14-hour flight. A team of dedicated volunteers meets them and transports them back to Tucson where they spend a few days in a home boarding setting recuperating from their long journeys and then into experienced foster homes where they begin to make strides into pet life.
Like any international traveler, there is much documentation and collaboration. The Aussie greyhounds receive well-vet visits upon arrival.
The hounds we receive from the Tijuana racetrack require more intense vet care beyond spay/neuter, dental cleaning and microchipping. Kenny at 8 years old has excessive diarrhea and we are waiting for results on an ultrasound. Lucy who is 5 1/2 raced 355 times went into heat and had a UTI.
And then there are the relinquished hounds who come to us almost all needing extensive vet care like Bruce who had Thoracic Duct Ligation Surgery and Flint who was found near a freeway entrance with physical and emotional wounds.
Yes, our efforts are a labor of love. Why? Because we love greyhounds. The demand for greyhound adoption is still great here in Tucson and beyond. Greyhounds, no matter where they originate from, deserve to excel as pets and be your best friends. SA Greys tries to make it happen.
Our goal for AZ Gives Day 2024 is to raise $15,000 from at least 100 donors. Please join us in supporting our ongoing commitment to the hounds in any way you can. Please invest in us.
Together, we can make a difference. Thank you.
The volunteers at SA Greys are exceptional and gracious when I volunteered to be a FOSTER Mom shortly after the death of my Meadow (greyhound). Well, I failed because I feel in LOVE with Freddy from Australia. The thoughtfulness of giving me the option to adopt was so loving and caring. Thank you.--Cynthia Guldberg
Diane has brought new life and energy into our house. Our quirky girl brings us surprise and something to look forward to every day - goofy and fearless, she's a catch. We couldn't be more thankful we found such a companion to our impressional boy Hawk, who appreciates a lady leader. To a long, unpredictable future with Diane!--Mark Hussa
Heaps and Heaps of gratitude to every one involved in getting Greg from Australia to our humble home in Tucson.--Doe and hound brother, Presley
"No Hound Left Behind." This group of dedicated volunteers lives and breathes that statement. They are amazing. We adopted one of their greyhounds. Amazing pet.
SA Greys is a truly wonderful, totally dedicated group. Most certainly in the top tier of greyhound rescue groups in the country.
This is an amazing group of dedicated dog lovers...
