WAMO, WAMO, an artist run non profit, operates safe, affordable facilities hosting art related businesses, artist studios, and 6,000 SF of exhibition space:
Steinfeld Warehouse Community Arts Center at 101 W. Sixth Street - 17 art studios and 10 Businesses - Steinfeld Gallery, an artist managed Gallery; Untitled Gallery - an artist self managed art gallery, Xerocraft - a 6,200 SF hacker space with KMKR Radio 99.9FM, Subspace - a 14 member Artist Collective with gallery for emerging artists, Buds Blooms & Bad Asses - a floral shop; The Crooked Feather - a maker of custom wings, KTDT Radio 99.1FM, POG poetry series, 3500 SF of exhibit and performance space - inside and in the courtyard; & an historic woodworker mural on the west side.
Toole Shed Studios at 197 E. Toole Avenue - twelve artists & three businesses & many murals - Studio ONE- a space for art and activism, Exploded View gallery & micro cinema, and BLX- a skateboard accessory shop.
Tucson Art Design Center at 3778 E Grant Road - has 20 artist studios, of which 16 have AC, and welding studios. There is a small gallery for artists to display their work.
Citizens Warehouse at 44 W. Sixth Street - is closing temporarily, but had 25 artists studios and 3 businesses, & 2 welding studios. It is WAMO's clear intention to maintain this property as art space once Downtown Links roadway construction is complete. WAMO's intention is to preserve this property as artist oriented space
WAMO needs funding to keep these spaces affordable to artists. These properties need to be kept up to safety standards and building codes just like any business, yet we need to keep them affordable for the arts. Accessibility ramps and lifts, renovated bathrooms, and additional exiting are just some areas where additional funding is needed. Funds to help acquire the Citizens Building are critically needed to create space for additional artists is also needed. Our current space is always 100% leased.
Curtis Alan Kiwak posted this review on FaceBook - This map reveals one of the hidden studio spaces supported by WAMO (Warehouse Arts Management Organization), the Tucson Art & Design Center. I've a studio in that space. It's hidden in plain sight . For the work WAMO does, I have a great deal of gratitude . Kudos to the WAMO board and representatives from Toole Shed, Citizen Transfer, Steinfeld Warehouse and my studio building , the Art & Design Center. Board members include Jim Glock (President), Sean Wilcox (Secretary), Mike Runde (Treasurer), David Lopez, Emily Cartagine, Jeremy Singer, Gabe Ruiz, David Contreras, and Byron B from KTDT Downtown Radio.
Special thanks for their support in fostering creativity!
